Following the massive earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, the Rapid Mapping module of the COPERNICUS emergency management service, for which ITHACA is production site since 2012, was activated for mapping the areas hit by the catastrophe.
ITHACA, together with representatives from DLR, EC, SERTIT, UN-SPIDER and USGS, participated to the IWG-SEM meeting in Oberpfaffenhofen on 20-21 May 2014 and handed over the chairmanship role, which rotates nominally on a yearly basis, to DLR.
In the first six months of operations of the EMS-Mapping, nearly 20 activations, almost one per week, were handled and related maps were produced in rush mode by the contracted service provider, a group of European industries led by the Italian company e-GEOS executing the service coordination and mapping production tasks.
