From November 28th to December 2nd developers, stakeholders and decision makers met at the GeoNode Summit in Rome. The Summit was organized by the UN World Food Program (WFP) and meetings were held at their headquarters. More than 50 people came from all around the world to discuss the state of the GeoNode development, future releases, new features and present their projects.
Following the massive earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, the Rapid Mapping module of the COPERNICUS emergency management service, for which ITHACA is production site since 2012, was activated for mapping the areas hit by the catastrophe.
For the first time Sentinel-1A satellite was operationally used to support emergency management operations in the Balkans, where prolonged heavy rainfalls and widespread flooding since the 15th of May 2014 triggered the declaration of the State of Emergency.
In the first six months of operations of the EMS-Mapping, nearly 20 activations, almost one per week, were handled and related maps were produced in rush mode by the contracted service provider, a group of European industries led by the Italian company e-GEOS executing the service coordination and mapping production tasks.
