ITHACA’s activities in support to humanitarian operations in Nepal: Copernicus EMS and OSM
Following the massive earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, the Rapid Mapping module of the COPERNICUS emergency management service, for which ITHACA is production site since 2012, was activated for mapping the areas hit by the catastrophe.
On specific demand of the Emergency Coordination and Response Centre of the European Commission (ERCC at DG ECHO), the service produced more than 30 maps in 10 days, shared among all users active in the emergency management, thus helping in the damage assessment and aid distribution phases.
Furthermore, ITHACA offered its help in processing satellite imagery over Nepal provided by DigitalGlobe and in publishing them as web services in order to allow volunteers to map affected areas and extract relevant data and maps supporting the emergency response. This activity is performed in strict collaboration with the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (http://hotosm.org).
