ITHACA’s activities are carried out by a team of young scientists coming from the academic world in the field of environmental engineering, who eagerly contribute to the development of our innovative projects. Our team consists of internationally experienced senior researchers, project-dedicated junior researchers and PhD fellows.

Piero Boccardo

Director

Associate Professor in Remote Sensing at Politecnico di Torino since 2001, supervisor of more than 70 degree and PhD theses, author of more than 100 scientific publications. Management of several projects in the field of Remote Sensing, GIS and Information Technology especially in support of Disaster Management. President of the AIT (Remote Sensing Italian Association) since 2010; President of the public company 5T; Member of the Steering Committee of ASITA (Federation of Scientific Associations for Environmental Information).

Education

PhD in "Geodetic and Topographic Sciences" at the Land, Environment and Geo- Engineering Department of Politecnico di Torino, Italy (1995). Grant awarded by the Italian Research Council (C.N.R.) in 1993 for a research activity at the Department of Geography and Anthropology, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA. Prize awarded by the Italian Research Council (C.N.R.) for the research activity carried out in USA.

Eros Agosto

GIS Consultant

Data management and web-based spatial applications development using Free and Open Source Software tools. LIDAR and photogrammetric data survey. Researcher in Geomatics at Politecnico di Torino and Ithaca from 2007 to 2013, with the following duties: Practical lessons on Topography, Cartography and GIS courses. Research about Web GIS applications based on Open Source Tools. Member of national and international research projects (GIS data management, Survey).

Education

PhD in Survey and Drawing for Buildings and Territorial Heritage Conservation at Politecnico di Torino, Italy (2006); final work on the Open Source chance in the management of spatial information on cultural heritage. Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering at Politecnico di Torino (2002), specialization in water (hydrogeology and hydraulics) and soil (geotechnics and geotechnology). Final work on the use of FOSS tools for a web application for the management of hydraulic networks.

Andrea Ajmar

Geodatabase Administrator

Spatial Data Infrastructure, Early Impact Analysis

Development and implementation of SDI mainly dedicated to emergency response. Development of E-R model for geographic data storage. Multiuser geodatabase management. Development of software procedures in support of early-warning and early impact analysis. More than 10 years of experience in analyzing environmental phenomena, with all the support provided by Geographic Information Systems: from geostatistical approaches for soil classification, to global soil cartography and databases, to flood risk reduction analysis and modelling, to interferometric DEM derivation, to geodatabases and SDIs development.

PhD in Geomatics at Politecnico di Torino, Italy (2011). Final thesis on the Design and implementation of a Spatial Data Infrastructure for the UN World Food Programme. Master’s Degree in Geology at Milan University, Italy (1994), research experiences in evaluating climate change effects on Alpine glaciers.

Irene Angeluccetti

GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

Early Impact Analysis, Drought Monitoring

Application of GIS and Remote Sensing in early warning applications to monitor droughts. 2-year fieldwork experience in Western Africa in the cooperation and development sector: coordinator of natural and agricultural resources management projects (EU-funded); technical consultant on hydraulic works designing (Italian Foreign Office-funded); technical support on project writing. Since 2010 collaborator with NGOs in the field of water management and soil conservation.

Emere Arco

GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

Early Impact Analysis

Application of GIS and Remote Sensing technologies in support to road network management in disaster scenarios and implementation of a methodology for planning evacuation and reliefs distribution. Collaboration with ITHACA in the production of thematic maps for disaster management, development and implementation of tools and automated GIS procedures for the analysis.

Currently PhD Student in Urban and Regional Development at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Master’s Degree in Territorial, Urban and Environmental Planning at Politecnico di Torino (2013), final thesis on local public transport network, implementation of an accessibility index using Network Analyst.

Simone Balbo

Web GIS Specialist

Spatial Data Infrastructure, Early Impact Analysis, Low Cost Mobile Mapping System

GIS data processing, Web platforms for geospatial data sharing, GPS surveys, Mobile Mapping Systems surveys, Spatial Data Infrastructure management, production of thematic maps with GIS applications for representing and georeferencing spatial information, programming and developement of GIS procedures, production of technical reports. Collaboration with the Global Facility for Disaster Recovery and Reduction of the World Bank - Washington, DC (US) on the implementation of a Web platform for geospatial data sharing in 2011. GIS specialist in collaboration with the Higher Institute on Territorial Systems for Innovation (SiTI, Torino) in 2009.

Multi-spectral and HR image processing, thematic cartography, GIS. Collaborator in Ithaca since 2014 for rapid mapping products and tools. 7-year experience as remote sensing and GIS consultant in international projects (Iraq, Kazakhstan, China, Chile) in the fields of environmental engineering and renewable energies.

Walther Cámaro García

Application of GIS and Remote Sensing in support to environmental analysis and thematic information extraction. Development and implementation of hydrologic and hydraulic applications in support to early- warning and early-impact analysis.

In charge of international projects, external relations, international bids at Ithaca since 2008. 8 years in the business promotion area at the Foreign Trade Office - Piemonte Chambers of Commerce: organization of collective participation to international exhibitions, partner search, reception of foreign delegations, organization of outgoing trade missions. 2 years as Export Dept. Manager in a SME operating in the electro-medical sector.

Education

Master’s Degree in Foreign Languages (English, German and Spanish) at Torino University, Italy (1998) with a degree thesis in English Language titled: "The dubbing of American movies into Italian: linguistic and cultural aspects". Exchange programs in Pueblo, Colorado (USA), Vienna (Austria), Brighton & Hove (UK).

Franca Disabato

Fabio Giulio Tonolo

Geomatics expert, remote sensing specialist

Early Impact Analysis

Research and operational activities focused on the use of geomatics techniques to provide spatial data services (with a main interest in the emergency preparedness/response domain), including acquisition, management and processing of geo-spatial data. Processing of satellite imagery (both active and passive sensors) for thematic information extraction and geometric processing of very high resolution satellite images for mapping purposes. Interest in UAV applications for humanitarian and civil protection actions.

Drafting and management of geomatics-related international projects proposals. Technical coordination of rapid mapping activities. Lecturer in national and international training courses mainly focused on Rapid Mapping and Remote Sensing (including master degree level, PhD, specializing master, summer school courses for academia). National scientific qualification to function as associate professor in Italian Universities for the period 2015-2020. Member of the Governing Council of the Italian Association of Remote Sensing (AIT) since 2014 (member since 2003). Co-chair of the ISPRS WG VIII/1 on Disaster management for the period 2012-2016. Chairman of the International Working Group on Satellite based Emergency Mapping (IWG-SEM) from April 2013 to May 2014. Secretary of the ISPRS WG VIII/1 on Disaster management for the period 2008-2012.

Early Impact Analysis

Rapid mapping, production of thematic maps in support of environmental disasters Researcher at ITHACA since 2013 involved in international project focused on emergency mapping and satellite image processing for the extraction of thematic information. Collaboration with the Higher Institute on Territorial Systems for Innovation (SiTI, Torino 2010–2013) on international research projects relating to valuation and classification of natural and cultural heritage, preservation of environmental assets, UNESCO nomination, database development, historical maps, planning and land management.

PhD in “Architectural Heritage and Landscape” at Politecnico di Torino, Italy (2011). Thesis on historical GIS for the territory of Villanova Mondovì. Master’s Degree in Architecture (Restoration and Valorization) at Politecnico di Torino (2008). Final dissertation on the topic “GIS based knowledge project on cultural heritage: documentation and systemic investigation capabilities for the restauration of St. Vito Chapel in Grugliasco”.

Salvatore Morreale

GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

Early Impact Analysis

Support in the management and elaboration of geospatial information derived from Remote Sensing data for emergency mapping. Processing, interpretation and classification of satellite images. Development of tools for feature extraction and automatic data processing in GIS environment. Experience in Geomatics innovative techniques, i.e. Laser scanner and UAVs, during the voluntary work in the DIRECT team (Disaster Recovery Team) at Politecnico di Torino. Participation to IX Thematic Workshop: Remote Sensing for soil protection and preservation of environment and territory (June 2015) and to VIII Conference AIT (June 2016). Currently collaborating in the production of thematic maps for disaster management, development and implementation of tools and automated GIS procedures for the analysis.

Paolo Pasquali

Web GIS Developer

Spatial Data Infrastructure, Web GIS development and spatial data analysis.

Design of open source applications for sharing and distributing spatial data. Has a 15+ year background experience in the Web and GIS field. Worked for an Italian leading publisher on projects for online and offline applications such as car navigation systems, web based fleet management, route planners for mobile. Since joining ITHACA his research has been focusing on open source software development and in particular on spatial data sharing applications. He has been working on the GeoNode project as a core developer for three years.

Francesca Perez

GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

Early Impact Analysis, Drought Monitoring

Remote sensing multispectral data processing in support to environmental analysis and thematic information extraction. Development and implementation of specific algorithms for satellite imagery elaboration. Support to early impact analyses. Study of the suitability of satellite derived vegetation data for hydrological analysis; development of procedures for the statistical analysis of long-term series of vegetation indexes, derived mainly from MODIS and AVHRR data, for vegetation stress conditions identification, and for analysis of historical vegetation trends and land cover changes. Practice assistant for the courses "Remote sensing" and "Analysis of observation data and Topography" at Politecnico di Torino from 2005 to 2010.

Early Impact Analysis

Junior tool developer with Python 2.7 for ArcGIS 10.2 and collaborator in ITHACA for rapid mapping products. Collaboration with Alta Scuola Politecnica project COLORADO: Community-based policies for natural resources sustainable development (2011 - 2013). European Spatial Development Planning network: Intensive Programme on sustainable urban regeneration strategies in Ankara at the Middle East Technical University (April – 2013). Internship at CSI Piemonte with the goal to evaluate the energetic consumption of residential buildings in Torino using GIS software (2011).

Magdalena Stefanova Vassileva

GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist

Early Impact Analysis

Remote sensing and GIS application for emergency analysis and mapping, in particular processing of SAR imagery and tool developing for flood extent extraction. Academic background in geotechnical and hydraulic defense of the territory. Two trainings followed with ESA:  ESA 5th Land Training Course 2014 dealt with Advanced SAR Remote Sensing and ESA Fringe 2015 dealt with Interferometric SAR techniques. Currently working at ITHACA for rapid mapping products and tools.

Master’s Degree in  Environmental and Territory Planning Engineering at University of Rome “La Sapienza”, Italy (2014). Thesis research developed in collaboration with ITHACA  “A New Open Source Tool For Flood Extent Detection From Satellite SAR Imagery”.
