ITHACA’s activities are carried out by a team of young scientists coming from the academic world in the field of environmental engineering, who eagerly contribute to the development of our innovative projects. Our team consists of internationally experienced senior researchers, project-dedicated junior researchers and PhD fellows.
Associate Professor in Remote Sensing at Politecnico di Torino since 2001, supervisor of more than 70 degree and PhD theses, author of more than 100 scientific publications. Management of several projects in the field of Remote Sensing, GIS and Information Technology especially in support of Disaster Management. President of the AIT (Remote Sensing Italian Association) since 2010; President of the public company 5T; Member of the Steering Committee of ASITA (Federation of Scientific Associations for Environmental Information).
PhD in "Geodetic and Topographic Sciences" at the Land, Environment and Geo- Engineering Department of Politecnico di Torino, Italy (1995). Grant awarded by the Italian Research Council (C.N.R.) in 1993 for a research activity at the Department of Geography and Anthropology, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, USA. Prize awarded by the Italian Research Council (C.N.R.) for the research activity carried out in USA.
Internal project manager for several international projects (H2020, EuropeAID, Civil Protection Financial Instrument) and services (ESA, EEA, Copernicus, The World Bank, GMES ). Development of software procedures in support of early-warning and early impact analysis. Development and implementation of SDI mainly dedicated to emergency response. Development of E-R model for geographic data storage. Multiuser geodatabase management. Processing of satellite imagery (both active and passive sensors) for thematic information extraction and geometric processing of very high resolution satellite images for mapping purposes. Lecturer in national and international training courses mainly focused on GIS and Remote Sensing (including master degree level and summer school courses for academia). Master’s Degree in Geology at Milan University, Italy (1994), research experiences in evaluating climate change effects on Alpine glaciers.
Application of GIS and Remote Sensing technologies in support to road network management in disaster scenarios and implementation of a methodology for planning evacuation and reliefs distribution. Collaboration with ITHACA in the production of thematic maps for disaster management, development and implementation of tools and automated GIS procedures for the analysis.
Currently PhD Student in Urban and Regional Development at Politecnico di Torino, Italy. Master’s Degree in Territorial, Urban and Environmental Planning at Politecnico di Torino (2013), final thesis on local public transport network, implementation of an accessibility index using Network Analyst.
GIS data processing, Web platforms for geospatial data sharing, GPS surveys, Mobile Mapping Systems surveys, Spatial Data Infrastructure management, production of thematic maps with GIS applications for representing and georeferencing spatial information, programming and developement of GIS procedures, production of technical reports. Collaboration with WaterView SRL on an estimating precipitation method from photographic images (October 2015 – June 2018). Research assistant at Politecnico di Torino from October 2016 to June 2017. Working at ITHACA on an Extreme Rainfall Detection System (ERDS), a service for the monitoring and forecasting of exceptional rainfall events, with a nearly global geographic coverage. Involved in international projects focused on the provision of global and quasi-global rainfall datasets enriched with ancillary information on heavy rainfall events. Master’s Degree in Architecture (Restoration and Valorization) at Politecnico di Torino (2008). Final dissertation on the topic “GIS based knowledge project on cultural heritage: documentation and systemic investigation capabilities for the restauration of St. Vito Chapel in Grugliasco”.

Design of open source applications for sharing and distributing spatial data. Has a 15+ year background experience in the Web and GIS field. Worked for an Italian leading publisher on projects for online and offline applications such as car navigation systems, web based fleet management, route planners for mobile. Since joining ITHACA his research has been focusing on open source software development and in particular on spatial data sharing applications. He has been working on the GeoNode project as a core developer for three years.

Study of the suitability of satellite derived vegetation data for hydrological analysis; development of procedures for the statistical analysis of long-term series of vegetation indexes, derived mainly from MODIS and AVHRR data, for vegetation stress conditions identification, and for analysis of historical vegetation trends and land cover changes. Collaboration with Alta Scuola Politecnica project COLORADO: Community-based policies for natural resources sustainable development (2011 - 2013). European Spatial Development Planning network: Intensive Programme on sustainable urban regeneration strategies in Ankara at the Middle East Technical University (April – 2013). Internship at CSI Piemonte with the goal to evaluate the energetic consumption of residential buildings in Torino using GIS software (2011).
